Juvéderm Santa Monica
Starting after our 20th birthday, our body produces one percentage point less collagen every year. Think about that. By the time you’re 50, your body is producing 30 percent less collagen than in your youth. That explains why our skin is more prone to the creation of wrinkles and lines, along with whole areas of volume loss, such as our cheeks. This is because collagen is the protein responsible for providing the structural framework under our skin. Without it, our skin sags, thins, and wrinkles.
That’s where dermal fillers come in. They fill back in some of this lost volume. At Dermatology Institute & Skin Care Center in Santa Monica, Juvéderm® is one of our most popular dermal fillers for treating lines around the nose and mouth.
What is Juvederm?
Like Restylane, Juvéderm® is made primarily from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body whose job is to plump and hydrate the skin. When Juvéderm® is injected beneath a crease or area with deficient volume, the hyaluronic acid binds with nearby water molecules, instantly plumping and firming up the skin, erasing the line or wrinkle. Juvéderm®, along with Restylane, are the world’s two most popular dermal fillers.
Where is Juvederm used?
If you’re writing something and you want to make an aside, you use parentheses. But who said they have a place on your face? As the skin loses collagen and thins, parentheses lines, referred to as marionette lines, frame both sides of your mouth. Also, nasolabial folds run from your nose down to the corners of your mouth. These are the places where Juvéderm® is really effective but it can also be used on thin lips, lip lines, tear troughs. Juvéderm® adds volume beneath the skin to smooth these lines and folds.
Who is a good candidate for Juvederm?
As long as the wrinkles you’re looking to treat are static wrinkles, Juvéderm® is an awesome solution. Static wrinkles form due to sun damage, declining collagen production, and other environmental factors. Static wrinkles tend to show themselves at all times. Juvéderm® and other dermal fillers are meant for static wrinkles.
However, if your wrinkles form due to muscle contractions under the skin, these are known as dynamic wrinkles. Crow’s feet, the 11s between your brows, and most forehead lines are all dynamic wrinkles. Juvéderm® does not work on these wrinkles — they are the domain of BOTOX.
Also, because hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the human body, adverse reactions to Juvederm® are very rare, making it a good option for most.
What is a Juvederm session like? Does it hurt?
We inject Juvéderm® in Santa Monica with a very tiny needle. Most patients equate the feeling to that of a pinprick and find it easy to tolerate. However, if you’d like, we can apply topical anesthetic cream or ice before we inject the Juvéderm®. A session takes just 15-20 minutes, and there isn’t any recovery time.
How long before I see results with Juvederm?
Once Juvéderm® is injected, it immediately binds with nearby water molecules and instantly returns volume. This pushes the skin back upward and erases the wrinkle or line. Your results are instantaneous although true results may not be seen for a few days until after the swelling has gone down.
How long will my results last?
Juvéderm® removes wrinkles and lines around your nose and mouth for up to one year. At that point, your body will eventually absorb the filler and you’ll need another session to maintain your results.
