5 Common Causes of Hair Loss and How to Treat Them

If you feel like you’re losing the hair on your head because you’re overly stressed about your kids, job, finances, or anything else, it may actually be happening. Although you may have thought that “losing the hair on my head” is just an expression, it’s something that can occur because of stress. But stress isn’t the only contributor to hair loss. What else is?

  • Illness: Did you know that illnesses like diabetes, low thyroid activity, cancer, the flu, or even a nutritional deficiency can lead to temporary hair loss? Luckily, with most of these conditions, if they are managed properly, you can stop future hair loss from occurring.
  • Head Trauma: Head trauma that happened near the hair follicles can interfere with hair growth and potentially cause permanent hair loss. Typically, this sort of thing happens when scar tissue forms after a burn, cosmetic surgery, or physical injury.
  • Pattern baldness: This is the most common cause of hair loss and is also called androgenic alopecia. Usually, this sort of baldness is caused by hereditary factors and starts at the hairline or crown. Depending on the type of pattern baldness you have, it may be gradual or permanent.
  • Alopecia Areata: This is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack your hair follicles which results in sudden hair loss all across the head, face, and body. This disease can be triggered by stress, other immune deficiencies, or even stress.
  • Traction Alopecia: Ariana Grande made headlines years ago when she said she experienced baldness from wearing a ponytail every day and from using too much hair dye. When there is too much trauma to the hair follicles from things such as braids, extension, or pointy tails, it can cause the hair to stop growing.
