Tips on using a facemask

With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing the surge onward throughout America, it is more important than ever for all individuals to take a proactive approach to protecting themselves from the Coronavirus by wearing a facemask. Facemasks are encouraged in many social settings and even while patients shop to reduce their risk of contracting COVID-19 from another person. However, many Santa Monica, California patients who need to wear masks for their job or leisure activities are finding that they are experiencing a wide range of skin issues. At the Dermatology Institute and Skin Care Center, Dr. Paul Yamauchi offers several tips to help protect the skin while protecting yourself from COVID-19.

Tips on using a facemask

  • Reduce dry skin by using an oil-free moisturizer as a protective layer to the skin and a way of hydrating
  • Cleanse the skin morning and night with a gentle cleanser
  • Apply petroleum jelly to the lips to avoid chapping and dryness before wearing your mask
  • Avoid makeup when wearing a mask as cosmetics can clog pores and increase the risk of acne breakouts
  • Avoid changing or switching skin care products during this time
  • Wear the proper mask, choosing one that has a natural breathable fabric such as cotton and has a comfortable fit that is snug but not tight
  • Take a mask break for 15 minutes for every four hours of mask wearing
  • Wash cloth masks regularly after each use to remove oils and skin cells that may collect on the mask itself
  • Continue to follow treatment plans that were created for your skin by your dermatologist
  • Reduce acne by using over-the-counter or prescription strength creams and topicals as directed
